As of 2007, according to the records of the Provincial Treasurer of Marinduque officially furnished to MACEC, Marcopper has standing tax debts of PhP 1,013,101,529.51 ($21,036,161.32) in the municipality of Sta.
In addition to the above tax debts is, another tax debt on the Marcopper siltation and decant system and lot totaling PhP 19,253,315.36 had not been collected by the Provincial Government of Marinduque despite favorable decision of the SC under GR 170532 dated April 30, 2009. (In this matter the Commission on Audit in 2014, said in its Report that non-collection "deprived the local government of much needed funds to finance its operations".) - COA
"Sensing their increasing unpopularity,
Marcopper/Placer Dome had allocated their resources carefully during the 1998
election. The campaign for governor by the sitting congresswoman, Carmencita
Reyes...was beneficiary of a large company grant for electric
power development. Her well-funded campaign was successful.
"The alliance with the mining company, still hopeful of
reopening, seemed to consolidate her family's political control. Her son,
Edmund Reyes, won the race for congressman even if he had no previous electoral
experience. There seemed to be recognition of mutual benefit between the Reyes
family and Marcopper/Placer Dome..." - Mining and the Environment in the Philippines: The Limits on Civil Society in a Weak State, David Wurfel, Philippine Studies, vol. 54, No. 1 (2006)
Pamimili ng boto. |
