Mesmerized by Marinduque, Tourism Sec Berna Puyat

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat was in Marinduque recently for a whirlwind tour. She describes her experience on her FB page.

Berna frees a butterfly as she makes a wish that more people will get to visit Marinduque

Ever wonder what lies at the heart of the Philippines? Marinduque, the (anatomical) heart-shaped island province in the MIMAROPA region, is also the geographic center of the archipelago. The Luzon Datum of 1911 can be found at the summit of  Mataas na Bundok, and it serves as the reference point for all survey and mapping activities in the country. The view from up here is spectacular and definitely worth the almost 500 steps it took to reach the deck.

At Casa de Emilio, an old colonial house, I had a taste of the cuisine of the Marinduqueno. Their version of kari-kari is quite unique. If I wasn’t allergic to seafood, I would have definitely loved the ulang na kagang, a seafood dish made from a native variety of crab called kagang. But their lechon was one of the best I have ever tasted!!! Lechoneros all over the country say that the native black pig from Marinduque are the best pig to roast!

For a small province, there’s a whirlwind of activities to do. I went island hopping to Maniwaya Island, dipped my toes in the healing sulfuric springs of the Malbog Sulfuric resort, learned about Moriones history at the National Museum, and visited the fortress-like Boac Cathedral, built in 1792 and now declared an Important Cultural Property. I also visited the Marl Insect and Butterfly farm, where I learned that over 75 percent of the nation’s butterfly breeders are found in Marinduque, which is a major exporter to the world, hence the province’s other moniker as the “Butterfly Capital of the Philippines.” The legend goes that if you free a butterfly it will grant you a wish. Guess who kept trying to catch and release butterflies? 😆

One of my wishes is that more people will get to visit Marinduque and experience the warm welcome I felt the moment I arrived. Guests are literally crowned in the putong or tubong ceremony and are blessed with a long life. It’s no wonder I left my heart in the “heart of the Philippine islands.”

Special thanks to Speaker Lord Allan Velasco @speaker_lord_velasco  and Gov Presbitero Velasco Jr.

Anunsyo at mensahe mula kay Gov. Presby Velasco: Marinduque nasa GCQ hanggang May 31

Presby Velasco, Province of Marinduque)

(Meron din namang Legend of Mt.

- EJ Bolata

CNN International called Marinduque the Philippine's next holiday haven

Marinduque's southern extremity. Photo: Eli J Obligacion

Did you know? CNN International once reported: "For years, Marinduque has been under the foreign tripper's radar, but not for long, if politicos and developers have their way. The laid-back island-province is now being touted as the Philippines’ next holiday haven..."

There were domestic flights then until something went very wrong somewhere. But Cebu Pacific Airlines now operates here, with no one getting in the way and the Marinduque Airport after runway rehabilitation, its terminal has been refurbished with local and national officials coming down to see the changes.

In May 2010, CNN International was saying that Marinduque could very well be “the next tourist hotspot in Asia”, together with Phu Quoc in Vietnam, Hainan Island in China and the Ho Tram Strip in Vietnam where billion dollar investments for resorts were being funneled by their governments and developers.

There wasn't even a billion peso investment by developers in Marinduque at that time and even now, and here they're talking dollars ha?

In June 2010, CNN followed its Marinduque sojourn with “25 killer things to do this summer”. That’s for people who look to the beach for some relief from the heat during vacation. In No. 12 was its recommendation to “visit one of Asia’s next gen tourist hotspots”, citing only one island, Marinduque in the Philippines and three other places in Vietnam and China, which are “up and coming tourist hotspots…amazing summer destinations, each for unique reasons.”

Incidentally, CNN article's mention of certain facts in a good light were apparently referenced from my blog. It even linked the mentioned article to a video I created.

This blogger.

Therefore, time's ripe for us to make a comeback in the foreign tripper's radar.

Cong. Lord Allan Velasco has done and continues to do his part. Justice Presby Velasco, Jr., so inspired and bullish to see Marinduque's agri and eco-tourism and cultural development could hardly wait to roll up his sleeves to face the task once elected governor of 'one of the world's top islands'!

Indeed, Marinduque's rare and golden opportunity to be a travel star in the region is here and now.

A New Universal Gazetteer: Or Geographical Dictionary (Jedidiah Morse, Richard Cary Morse), Memorias sobre las Observaciones astronomicas, Vol. 2 (Josef Espinosa y Tello), The Nautical Magazine and Naval Chronicle for 1869, at iba pa.

Mahanguin'

By design kaya?

[Fol. 22:] The island of Malindig--named thus on account of a high mountain that is in it, and which the Spaniards call Marinduque—is more than forty leguas from Manila, extends north and south, and is in the course which is taken by the galleons on the Nueva España trade-route… and in the year 1622 this island was transferred to the Society by his illustrious Lordship Don Fray Miguel Garzia Serrano, the archbishop of Manila… and desirous that his sheep should have the spiritual nourishment that is necessary for their souls--for it was exceedingly difficult for him always to find a secular priest to station there, on account of the distance from Manila…

The Society gladly overcame these difficulties for the sake of the spiritual fruit which could be gathered among those Indians; and our ministers, applying themselves to the cultivation [of that field], went about among those rugged mountains--from which they brought out some heathens, and others who were Christians, but who were living like heathen, without any spiritual direction. They baptized the heathens and instructed the Christians; and, in order that the results might be permanent, Ours gradually settled them in villages which they formed; there are three of these, Bovac, Santa Cruz, and Gasan, and formerly there was a visita in Mahanguin.

“Formerly there was a visita in Mahanguin”.

Southern Marinduque. Google map

Location
“Mahanguin, the S. extremity of the island of Marindugera (sic). Lon. 121(deg) 51’E. Lat. 13(deg)16’N.” (A New Universal Gazetteer: Or Geographical Dictionary by Jedidiah Morse, Richard Cary Morse)'

Maranduque (sic) is a large island with a very lofty peak on its southern extremity, which is barren, rugged, and rocky, to the waters’ edge, - a detached rock south of it... The Vineges are three small islands westward of Port Mahanguin, they stand much further from the land than as marked on the chart.  (The Nautical Magazine and Naval Chronicle for 1869, a Journal of Papers on Subjects).

1899. Map of US Coast and Geological Survey.
Napalitan na ang ilang mga pangalan. Tuluyang nawala ang Mahanguin.

1903 (US). Rand McNally map. Mahanguin no more

“S. Cape Mahanguin” naman:

“S. Cape Mahanguin, S. extremity of the island of Marindugera (sic), Lon. 121.51. E. Lat. 13.16.N.” (Geographical Dictionary, Or Universal Gazetteer: Ancient and Modern (Joseph Emerson Worcester, Flagg and Gould, 1817)

Cape: In geography, a cape is a headland or a promontory of large size extending into a body of water, usually the sea. A cape usually represents a marked change in trend of the coastline which makes them prone to natural forms of erosion, mainly tidal actions.

Mahanguin: Southern extremity of the island of Marinduque

(For this reason, Fr. Miguel Garzia Serrano, Archbishop of Manila, took him for a visit to his Archbishop, and testified to his talent, his zeal, and his tireless commitment to the Confessional: he was Minister in Maragondong, and in Marinduque where he went, Venerable Martyr Juan de las Misas, did Missions in Bondoc, and in Mindoro with great benefit of the Gentiles, and Christians, in which he suffered great discomforts. He was so humble, and a friend to work with, that being a Theology student, he went several times to help in the kitchen, and to knead the bread, and other humble trades).
Serrano, Misas, Gentiles, Christians
Ituloy natin:

(When he was Minister in Maragondong, he helped with the work, carrying the stone, and working with the Indians: he was semantic in poverty, in obedience, and in charity, of which he gave several examples:
Being in Mahanguin, a furious typhoon demolished the House, in which the Father lived, went to another of an Indian, but it was knocked down as well, so he stayed in the street, where he caught all the inclemency, cold, and rain of the bagyo, which penetrated him up to the bones, he entirely surrendered. He made them go to the Cabezera, where he had the Consolation of no Father (?), to give him the Sacraments: but God by means of a rare chance, to pass through there a Clerigo of Zebu, arranged…. And I still shudder, that an Indian gave him poison, irritated, because the Father requested what is good for his soul (?)

By Charles E. O'Neill

Missionary, victim of violence
Born in 1593, Mexico; Died 4/17 October 1625, at sea, near Mindoro, Philippines. (32 years old)
Arrived May 18, 1609, Manila, Philippines; or before 1620.

Studied at the San Jose school before entering the San Pedro de Manila as a novitiate. Due to his bad health, he could not give full time to the studies, and for the moment he was sent to a residence in Antipolo. After seven months of sufficient improvement, he went on to finish the theology and was ordained, although without having any good health. He was proficient in the Tagalog and his affable genius won the goodwill of the people. In 1620, he worked at the mission of Naujan, in Mindoro.

Upon returning from preaching to the Tagalogs of the island of Marinduque on the feast of St. Francis, a ship of Camucones from the islands near Borneo approached their boat. When they heard that there was a priest on board, they fired on them and killed Misas. Afterwards, they seized the boat and went to the corpse and beheaded him. In addition, they attacked the coastal towns, killing many, and desecrating churches and liturgical ornaments.

Beheading of Longhino

Mula sa History of the Jesuits in the Philippines III A Brief Sketch (Thomas B. Cannon, SJ):
“MARINDUQUE MARTYR. On Oct. 4th 1625, Fr. Juan de las Misas, a Mexican, was martyred in Marinduque by Moros from the south. He had studied at San Jose.”

Malindig.

The municipality of Buenavista is fully engaged in preparations for the celebration of its Centennial. The line of activities from July until the approach of the Christmas holiday season is geared towards a festive and memorable occasion.

What was Buenavista before it became a fully recognized town?

‘Sabang’ was the old name of today’s municipality of Buenavista in Marinduque, after the name of one of two rivers that run through this beautiful quiet town.

Buenavista meaning “good view” was formerly a part of Gasan, one of the oldest ‘visitas’ established during the Spanish colonization of the island.

During the early American period the sulphuric spring located in Malbog gained some renown for its therapeutic and healing qualities. It did not escape the attention of a US Army surgeon who wrote that “it is said that drinking of this water would stop diarrhea of any kind and possible even now to buy water from this spring in any drugstore in Manila”.

Article in Philadelphia Medical Journal, 1903

In 1904, water from this spring labeled Agua de Boac was part of the Philippine Exposition in the first St. Louis World's Fair.

Back in 1900 US soldiers including Captain Shields of the Battle of Pulang Lupa narrative were turned over by Filipino soldiers in Buenavista. The American prisoners were brought to the former Spanish Ship “Venus” and the US’ Bennington, both moored along the Buenavista coast.
