When I posted throwback pics from 2008 of Bulong dance-drama presented in the six towns of Marinduque as part of the NCCA-PGM National Arts Month-Araw ng Marinduque project, I had no inkling that it would be restaged one and a half months later. But it happened.

What is BULONG?
This
Dance-Drama was inspired by a compilation of Marinduque’s folklores published
in 1914 and annotated by anthopologist Henry Otley Beyer, known as the Father
of Philippine Anthropology. “Bulong”, pronounced boo’-long, is defined as the
collective name of spirits that bodily transport humans into another place or
dimension. It is thus a glimpse into local traditional stories and bits and
pieces of Marinduque’s ancient history.
SYNOPSIS:
Teenage
Salve catching ‘bilabila’ (butterflies), gets lost in the forest. She finds
herself in the company of elemental spirits and creatures of the underworld
like patianacs, asuangs, duwendes, lambanas, engkanto, white lady. She is taken
to the world of her ancestors under the rule of Katalona and witnesses their
rituals and practices and how these were supplanted by a new set of beliefs. The
spirits free her at last but Engkanto, calling in Aswangs get in the way. With
no one to save Salve except herself, she uses the folk formula to set herself
free from her vicious abductors.
