Exact date of establishment unknown but according to tradition is the oldest Catholic cemetery in Boac. “Campo Santo de Tampus” as it is referred to by some, is believed to be as old as the Boac Cathedral, was therefore built in the 1700s.
This parish cemetery located on a hill in a sitio of Tampus was once surrounded by stone walls with an iron gate, but without an interment chapel. The parish had intended to build more niches, but abandoned the idea for sanitary considerations. The frontispiece’ dimension is thirty-five (35 meters and sixty-eight 68 meters deep and seventy three 73 meters. The lot is not more than the one occupied by the wall of the cemetery. This is based on the following entry from “Copia de Inventario de Bienes Inmuebles y Raices de la Parroquia de Boac, No. 3 y 4 paginas 1” written in the 1930’s:
“Cementerio parroquial ubicado en el sitio de Tampus cercado de muros de piedra co puerta de hierro con nichos, sin capilla y en condiciones para aumentar mas nichos, tiene su dimension de frontispicio treinta y cinco (35 metro y sesenta y ocho 68 metros de fondo setenta y tres 73 metros. Su solar no es mas que el ocupado por el muro del cementerio. “
The manner of internment were pozo (burying in the ground) and nicho (using concrete niche). Final resting place for the people of Boac prior to its permanent closure in 1932.
The town’s leaders, the rich and the poor, those massacred at Casa Real during the Philippine Revolution were buried here, some actually identified and named as heroes, as well as the revered parish priests and nuns of yore.
Fr. Saturnino Trinidad, parish priest from February 1899 to November 21, 1920 who contributed a lot for the development of Boac, was buried here on May 27, 1925. (San Juan, 2018).
He was mentioned in the historical marker at the Boac Cathedral as follows: “ANG PARI NG PAROKYA, SATURNINO TRINIDAD, AY TUMULONG KAY KAPITAN H.H. BANDHOLTZ, U.S.A., SA PAGPAPASUKO KAY KORONEL MAXIMO ABAD SA 300 MANGHIHIMAGSIK.”
According to old-timers, the first governor of Marinduque, Military Governor Martin Lardizabal (1898-1901), was buried here. Lardizabal was Commandant of the Marinduque Revolutionary Forces during the Philippine-American War .
It could be converted into a Shrine or new cemetery with appropriate historical markers, serving as a focus for the pilgrimage of the descendants of those buried here, and for the sons and daughters of Marinduque, protected from activities deemed disrespectful.
Part of the old, abandoned cemetery.

Before the creation of the Diocese of Lipa by St. Pius X, the island of Marinduque, since 14 August 1595 till 10 April 1910, belonged to Archdiocese of Manila. When the Diocese of Lucena was created on 20 August 1950, Marinduque became a part of this Diocese. On 2 April 1977, by virtue of the apostolic bull “Cum Tempore Maturare” issued by Pope Paul VI, Marinduque was created as an independent diocese, called Diocese of Boac.On 10 May 1978, carried by the effect of the Papal bull, the Diocese of Boac was canonically erected according to the Decretum Executorium signed by Most. Rev. Bruno Torpigliani, the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines.
After the building that served as a convent and school (Immaculate Conception College), was totally destroyed in 1987, the Benedictine Sisters running the school surrendered the building to the Diocese. A new building that now houses the chancery of the Diocese of Boac was constructed. |
Most Rev. Rafael M. Lim, the former Bishop of Laoag since 1971 and
a native of Boac, was appointed on 26 January 1978 by Paul VI as the first
Bishop of the new diocese. Lim was instrumental for the construction of the
imposing Diocese of Boac chancery. He passed away on 10 September 1998.
His successor, Bishop Jose F. Oliveros, organized the First
Diocesan Synod on May 4-9, 2003. Its
objectives include assessing and evaluating the life of the faithful, pastoral activities
past and present, and to plan for the better future of the Diocese.
The present Bishop, Most Rev. Marcelino Antonio Malabanan Maralit Jr. was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Boac by Pope Francis on December 31, 2014. He replaced Bishop Reynaldo G. Evangelista after the latter was installed as the Bishop of Imus in April 2013.
