The next speaker of the House of
Representatives must take the lead in supporting the legislative agenda of
President Rodrigo Duterte in the next three years to ensure the success of the
administration’s programs for the Filipino people, Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan
Velasco said.
“Leadership is important, but it’s equally
important that the next speaker is free from political ambition to ensure that
all the priority legislation of the President is successful,” Velasco said.
The lawmaker from Marinduque lamented how
some of the government’s key legislation have been pushed back because of
intramurals in the bigger chamber, and sometimes with its counterparts in the
Senate.
“We’ve had enough bickering in Congress,”
Velasco said. “What Malacanang needs is a true ally in the House of
Representatives that will help carry its agenda until the end.”
At this point, however, it is the task of
every ally of the Chief Executive to ensure that all his candidates win in the
May 13 mid-term elections.
“Any discussion on the speakership is
premature,” Velasco said. “Dapat manalo muna ang lahat o karamihan ng alyado ng
Pangulo para masiguro na solid ang suporta sa mga programa ng gobyerno.”
