DAVAO CITY—The city government of Davao extended more financial assistance to victims of Typhoon “Nina” in Luzon.
On Tuesday, the 18th City Council approved through suspended rules P3 million in assistance to three provinces devastated by “Nina” last month, to be distributed to towns in Marinduque, Quezon and Batangas provinces.

In December, the City Council also approved P11 million in assistance to the provinces of Albay, Camarines Sur, Marinduque and Catanduanes. Davao also sent 20,000 food packs to these provinces last year, which were distributed before New Year’s Eve.
Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang, the committee on finance, ways and means chairperson, said the office of Mayor Sara Duterte asked to use a portion of Davao’s Quick Response Fund to help the three provinces.
“We receive a letter of urgency from the Mayor’s office for the approval of the additional P3 million financial assistance, for the victims of Typhoon “Nina.” The fund will be coming from the calamity fund of the city for this year,” Dayanghirang said.
Before Davao can extend financial aid to calamity-stricken provinces, the areas must declare first that they are under a state of calamity, the councilor said.
“There were 43,620 families affected by the typhoon or 192,146 individuals. Central 911 Chief Emmanuel Jaldon will deliver the financial aid to the victims,” Dayanghirang said.
“We also authorized Mr. Jaldon to check the condition of the provinces and to monitor that the money will be used for the benefit of the people,” he added. - by F. Pearl A. Gajunera/Manila Standard
