Piyestahan, fiesta!

Fiesta buntings. In Marinduque, each barangay celebrates its own fiesta on the feast of its adopted patron saint. Sports (inter-barangay Paliga in basketball for example) and cultural activities ranging from amateur singing contests to beauty pageants (male, female or gay), organized by local committees formed for the purpose are held.

Rain or shine the fiesta goes on for it is preceded by days of preparation. Lots of drinking, food and laughter, it is an intrinsic part of local culture. Thanksgiving masses hosted by the hermano and hermana are offered.

Many barangays (and towns), prefer the month of May for the holding of their fiestas, that it is almost certain such a celebration is being held in at least one location somewhere in Marinduque any day of the month associated with flowers.

Today a Happy Fiesta is celebrated in Brgy. Laylay in Boac.
