Taking a Break with a Philippine Tourism Video

The world is just awesome in Marinduque, too !!!

"I Love the Whole World" is an advertising campaign launched by Discovery Channel last year to promote its tagline: "The World is Just... Awesome". The song used is a re-writing of a scouting song "I Love the Mountains" with the distinctive chorus "boom-de-yah-dah, boom-de-yah-dah". In our days during campfires in the central mountains of Marinduque we sang it as "boom-biyaya, boom-biyaya" (biyaya is Tagalog for grace or blessing).

I created this "Boom-De-Yah-Dah" video for the Discovery Network's Channel on YouTube as a video response to their popular ad. Such responses have been posted on the said Channel from all over the world. This Marinduque one features my 'moriones version'.

MARINDUQUE: CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES

The title is not only based on NAMRIA's pronouncements that in Marinduque lies the geodetic center of the Philippines, the Luzon Datum, known as the mother of all Philippine surveys. Having known Marinduque as the heart of the Philippines, because the island has the shape of a human heart, and knowing that the language spoken here has been identified as the root of a language (Tagalog) from which national forms of speech have sprung (Filipino, the national language is based on Tagalog), no one else could argue the national importance of this island called Marinduque. Its cultural, historical, geographical and touristic significance are here for all to witness and wonder, to whine and whisper about.

AIRSOFT: MARINDUQUE ADVENTURE SERIES

The old copper and ore minesite in Capayang, Mogpog on the island of Marinduque, closed down in the 60's, now serve as an ideal site for all types of adventure sports. Mountain biking, trekking, defensive shooting, motocross are some of it. Others just go to the surrounding areas for picnics and to fish in a man-made lake. This is a slideshow of an airsoft event organized by local boys in cooperation with the provincial government.

BULUSUKAN FALLS: Marinduque Adventure Series

Bulusukan Falls flows from the remaining forests of Bagtingon, in Buenavista, Marinduque, Philippines. The place has been identified through a study conducted by Prof. Panchito Labay of MSC as the biggest natural habitat of butterflies in this island-province. With more than 300 endemic butterfly species found in this area alone - apparently attracted by the high volume of negative ions in said place - the butterfly industry here have found a few followers.

Other endemic species of animals found here are monkeys, wild cats, deer and boas. Unique tropical flora also abound. The Falls remain a popular picnic place for young people from Buenavista, Gasan and nearby towns.

MARINDUQUE ADVENTURE SERIES: 1st Defensive Shooting Competition

Called the 1st Governor Bong Carrion Cup, the first defensive shooting competition was recently held at the old CMI minesite in Capayang, Mogpog in Marinduque. Organized in cooperation with the Morion Combat Pistol & Rifles Association (MCPRA), and Team ARMSCOR Shooting & Hunting Club of Manila, the event saw no less than Carrion and provincial administrator, Allan Velasco trying their hands at target shooting with pistols.

The old minesite (formerly known as Consolidated Mines, Inc. that closed down in the 60's) has, during the last couple of years, been converted as a site for adventure sports activities including local games and mountain biking competitions.

SEARCHING FOR MARINDUQUE SYMBOLS

PULANG LUPA HIGHLIGHTS

Atop the Pulang Lupa mountain (Bolo),stands a small obelisk of marble tiles, a mute witness to a bloody battle that happened there 107 years ago, the Battle of Pulang Lupa which sent reverberating shock waves to the American high command and played out in American papers at that time. The difficulty in trekking that mountain (the 3-km rough road that leads to the site is slippery and dangerous when it rains), has caused annual cries and whispers of complaint from everyone when the main program commemorating the event is held there.

Only twice during the last 10 years did commemorative programs transpire. But then, saan pa kaya? As if the breathtaking panoramic view of Mt. Malindig and the eastern islands with the Bicol Peninsula beyond is not enough reward to the senses. But the spirit of Abad, Lardizabal, Vida, Quinto, et al, the true Marinduqueno Spirit must live on!

"AWIT SA PULANG LUPA"

Typhoon "Reming" in November 2006, and the tropical rains rendered the Pulang Lupa Shrine impassable for many months. In August 2007, we visited the site with a team from the capitol headed by Archt. Glenn Openiano and saw the challenge...

On September 13, 2007, the provincial celebration of the Battle of Pulang Lupa was held at the mountain site in Brgy. Bolo, Torrijos. Previous celebrations were largely confined to the municipality with activities held at the town center.

Thousands trooped to the site consisting of Boy and Girl Scouts, government officials and public employees, teachers, soldiers, descendants of the local heroes, performers from Mogpog("Pateado"), Boac (Moriones), Gasan (Pangkat Kalutang) and Torrijos ("Abukay"), including the Teatro Balangaw and Marinduque Provincial Capitol Choir. This video contains the Balangaw presentation of "Awit sa Pulang Lupa" and footages of our first inspection of the site.
