Presbitero J. Velasco, Jr.

Moriones canceled as pandemic rages; few morions still roam but observe social distancing

In Mogpog town a few penitent morions are still seen quietly practicing their Holy Week panata. This photo was posted today on Facebook courtesy of Virgen delos Remedios with the following description: "Patuloy ang Panata sa Bayan ng Mogpog kung saan nagsimula ang MORYONAN !

BOAC, Marinduque, Philippines — Months ahead of this year’s Holy Week, Mark Montevirgen already had his new set of Morion costume ready. He had ordered a mask with a custom-made body armor of an ancient Roman soldier for the Lenten parade in Marinduque province.

But Montevirgen was caught in the lockdown that prevented him from going home to Boac, the provincial capital.

So far, with four cases of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Marinduque had shut its door to tourists and even returning residents since the “enhanced community quarantine” in Luzon was imposed last month.

On Wednesday, the provincial government decided to cancel the popular religious tradition to prevent the spread of the virus on the island.

First time since war

The streets of Boac, normally busy with foreign visitors at this time of the year, are now quiet and empty. Houses are shut and lodging facilities unoccupied.

It was the first time, except during World War II, that there would be no Moriones (a few still quietly roam the streets and practice social distancing as shown in photos here - blogger), an ancient rite that dates back to 1800s and a major tourist come-on of the island, said provincial tourism chief Gerry Jamilla.

A few morions in Boac still quietly make their presence felt but practice social distancing. Over the traditional wooden mask this one makes a point by wearing the now familiar face mask versus the coronavirus.

“We were actually thinking maybe we could still allow people to parade individually—wear your costume, walk outside your house, then go back home,” Jamilla said.

“But we thought that might only encourage people to congregate,” he added.

Randolf Olympia from Boac also felt sad about missing Moriones, which he and many others considered a vow or a way of penitence.

Moriones is observed across six towns of Marinduque by wearing a Roman soldier’s headgear during the procession. Its highlight is the “pugutan,” or the reenactment of the beheading of Longinus, the Roman soldier who speared the side of Christ, held on Easter Sunday.Beyond rites

“A lot of Morions are asking me about it. I just said maybe there are other ways to keep our vow,” said Montevirgen, who is also a leader of Kapatirang Morion ng Marinduque para kay Kristo.

The Catholic Church supported the government’s call to cancel the Moriones. Boac Bishop Marcelino Antonio Maralit Jr. said one’s devotion “goes beyond the rites.”

But Maralit said Lenten Masses would push through and would be streamed live on the internet, as well as on local television and radio stations, especially for those in remote communities.

On Palm Sunday, he said, village officials would be given palm fronds “blessed” by the church for distribution to every household.

Pugutan: "Silang mga nakalimot ng lumipas..."

The call made by the Most Rev. Bishop Reynaldo G. Evangelista on his wish, among others, to make Marinduque a Spiritual-Renewal Destination in the near future, and his concern and that of other Bishops to make Easter truly a day of rejoicing starting with the early morning Easter "Salubong" ("Ito po ng ating pinaghandaan..."), also puts in perspective a long running conflict between the local church and the provincial government on the introduction of the Black Saturday evening "Sinakulo-Pugutan" introduced in the late 70's.

Numerous articles and essays have been written and published in local and international press, authored by foreign and local scholars that critically examined this festival, particularly, the replacement of the Pugutan street-pageant by the staged Sinakulo, inspired by the Obando, Bulacan original. Some titles:

(This post was originally published on this blog on March 17, 2010)
"Requiem for a Tradition" by Edwin Go.

“The Bloodless Head of Longinus: Political Interventions and the Decapitation of the Moriones Tradition in Marinduque” by William Peterson, a scholarly study that underlines how a century-old tradition was drastically changed in one sweep by political interventions;

“Holy Week in the ‘Heart of the Philippines" by William Peterson on spirituality, theatre, community and the Moriones Festival;

“Change and continuity of Moryonan in the context of tourism : a case study of culture process in Marinduque, Philippines” by Patricia Nicholson that warned about the tradition already losing its authenticity becoming less of an attraction to foreign tourists;

"Folklore without a folk: questions in the preservation of the Marinduque Moriones heritage", (2016) Catherine S. Chan, September 2016 International Journal of Heritage Studies 23. "Since the 1870s, the Moriones festival has been part of the Lenten celebrations in Marinduque, located at the heart of the Philippines. Inventoried by the Philippine government, the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) and the Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (ICHCAP) as one of the Philippines’ intangible cultural heritage, the Moriones festival has exhibited various problems regarding a decreasing historical value, political intervention and increasing detachment from the Marinduque community. This study raises questions on regional inventorying of ICH, especially in light of what needs to be tackled before, during and after the incorporation of traditions and practices as ICH."

"Moryon: Panata sa Likod ng Maskara”, (2002), by Danilo Mandia which underlined how a political figure he described as "kumbistador ng kultura" used power to the extent that "nanaig ang kapangyarihan at nagawa ang gustong gawin ayon sa kanyang pansariling kagustuhan”.

The paper underlined the enmity created between the provincial government and the local Church as both competed for the Black Saturday audience with the church remaining critical.

What exactly did the local Church have to say?

Nais niya itong tawaging The Bible Story. “Senakulo would be a folk art” (Reyes, 2001. Panayam)

“I was called by the parish council, why I was changing tradition? Well, I said, performers were the ones who requested me to show to the people their performance in the evening by means of follow-spots... follow spots ang curtain.

Ay yoon namang Senakulo ay salvation history, from creation to the resurrection” (Oliverio. 2002 Feb. 25)

(Malapad. 2001 March 2)

(Serafin Malinao, 2000 Dec. 27. Panayam).
